Alex Coutinho

2007-2014

Dr. Alex Coutinho is a renowned global health leader with over 40 years of experience practicing medicine and public health in Africa. Since the emergence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda in 1982, he has been actively involved in providing care and treatment services to individuals living with HIV. Dr. Coutinho has led large-scale HIV prevention, care, and treatment programmes in Swaziland, Uganda, and Rwanda. He served as the Executive Director of TASO from 2001 to 2007, expanding care and treatment services to over 100,000 individuals in Uganda. As the Executive Director of the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University from 2007 to 2014, he led teams that expanded access to HIV care and treatment for 105,000 individuals and implemented a male circumcision programme. Dr. Coutinho has also held key positions in organizations such as the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the Global Fund, and has received the prestigious Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize for his contributions to global health.
