Empowered to Live Safely in an HIV Discordant Relationship
At just 20 years old, Nassonzi John Mary faced unimaginable challenges. Shortly after losing her second baby, she discovered that her husband was living with HIV. The news left her isolated, depressed, and fearful of contracting the virus herself. Community stigma compounded her pain, with people openly judging her and making her feel worthless.
In March 2022, Nassonzi was enrolled in the DREAMS program, implemented by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kawempe. A friend introduced her to the model safe space, where she met mentors and DREAMS Ambassadors who offered counseling and psychosocial support. Through the program, she gained a sense of belonging and became part of the DREAMS Champions group.
Nassonzi was supported to test for HIV and received a negative result. She completed Stepping Stones training, which taught her about HIV, safer sex practices, and how to protect herself while living in a discordant relationship. She also began taking PrEP and actively supports her husband to remain adherent to treatment.
“DREAMS gave me hope when I thought my life was over, now I can provide for my son, support my husband, and show other young women that they too can live healthy and empowered lives.”
Beyond health services, Nassonzi benefited from economic strengthening activities. She joined a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), saving UGX 2,000 weekly, and pursued apprenticeship training in photography and videography. With her savings and her husband’s support, she purchased a secondhand computer to edit videos and photos, and she now supports a local studio on weekends. She also runs a small food business that earns her a daily profit.
Her commitment and leadership did not go unnoticed. In January 2023, Nassonzi was hired as a paid DREAMS Peer Facilitator, earning a monthly income that allows her to provide for herself and her young son. Today, she is financially independent, hopeful, and determined to inspire other young women.
The DREAMS program, supported by CDC and implemented by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), plays a key role in reducing HIV risk and improving the lives of adolescent girls and young women in Uganda. Nassonzi’s journey shows how comprehensive support, ranging from health services to economic empowerment, can transform vulnerability into strength. Her story reflects the heart of DREAMS: helping young women become determined, resilient, empowered, AIDS-free, mentored, and safe.
