From Vulnerability to Opportunity: Mariam’s Journey with DREAMS
At just 14 years old, Mariam lost both of her parents. As a double orphan, she was left to survive on her own. To meet her basic needs, she turned to high-risk sexual relationships with multiple partners who provided her with money. This put her at serious risk of HIV infection and other negative health outcomes.
In February 2022, Mariam joined the DREAMS program implemented by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala. Through DREAMS, she received a comprehensive package of services that helped her transform her life. She participated in Stepping Stones, gained access to HIV testing and STI treatment, and learned about family planning and the risks of multiple sexual partners. For the first time, she understood her vulnerability to HIV and was empowered to make healthier choices.
Beyond health services, Mariam benefited from financial literacy training and joined a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) through the Sky Youth Group. She began saving regularly and setting financial goals. Through the apprenticeship component, she pursued training in photography and videography. Mariam excelled, graduating as the top student in her class. Soon after, she began taking on small videography projects covering birthdays and weddings, using her new skills to earn an income and support herself independently.
Today, Mariam saves UGX 40,000 (USD 11) each month and is working toward purchasing her own equipment. She has also been hired as an instructor by Rivieria Media, the very institution that trained her, to mentor other DREAMS girls pursuing photography and videography apprenticeships.
Mariam’s story is one of resilience and empowerment. With the support of DREAMS, she has moved from vulnerability to opportunity—building a healthy, independent, and hopeful future for herself, while inspiring and equipping other young women to do the same.
