IDI Senior Manager Dr. Alex Muganzi Re-elected as Africa Representative to the International AIDS Society (IAS) Governing Council

Dr. Alex Muganzi, Head of the IDI Outreach Department, was in May 2014 re-elected for another four year term (July 2014-July 2018) as Africa’s representative to the IAS Governing Council (GC). The IAS GC is the executive body of the IAS.  Dr. Alex Muganzi emerged the top candidate in a very competitive race of 16 nominated eminent professionals involved in the HIV/AIDS field from the African continent.   The 16 candidates were from ten African Countries: Uganda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Malawi, Zambia, Ghana and DRC.

The IAS is the world’s leading independent association of HIV professionals, with over 12,000 active members from 172 countries across the world. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.

The IAS Governing council consists of elected representatives from the five regions of the world. These are: 1) Africa, 2) Europe, 3) USA and Canada 4) Latin America and the Caribbean, 5) Asia and the Pacific Islands. The IAS GC is headed by a president. The current president is Professor Francoise Barre Ssinousi, who co-discovered HIV and is the 2008 Nobel Prize laureate.

To be nominated for election as IAS GC member, the nominee must be working professionally in the field of HIV/AIDS, be able to demonstrate leadership in the HIV/AIDS field and knowledge of HIV and AIDS organizations, societies and networks within their region, as well as engagement with them, among other requirements.

Dr. Muganzi was first elected to the IAS Governing Council in July 2010 as Africa’s representative. During his first term as an IAS board member, Dr. Muganzi served as Africa’s representative on the IAS Executive Committee as well as a member of the IAS Finance Committee, providing oversight for IAS finances and budgets. The Executive Committee acts on behalf of the IAS Governing Council to provide effective oversight and review of IAS operations and finances. He has also represented the IAS as a member of the International Steering Committee for the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) for both ICASA 2011 (Addis Ababa) and ICASA 2013 (Cape Town), among several other roles. 

Dr. Muganzi will formally take office for his second term on 25th July 2014 in Melbourne, Australia at the closing of AIDS 2014 Conference (20th International AIDS conference).

Dr. Muganzi was also recently selected as a member of Technical Review Panel (TRP) of the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. The TRP is an independent panel of international experts who review funding requests to the Global Fund for technical merit and strategic focus and make funding recommendations.  The TRP is also an advisory body to the Global Fund board and plays an important role in the Global Fund’s strategy development and implementation.
