On 17 October, 2014, Dr. Alex Coutinho ended his seven year long term of service as the Executive Director (ED) of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI). During this period, Dr. Coutinho has been a great leader, mentor, motivator, and role model to all the staff at IDI.

Under his strong and outward-looking leadership, IDI achieved significant accomplishments across all the main IDI programmes: Prevention, Care & Treatment; Training & Capacity Development; Research; Outreach; Laboratory Services; and Systems Strengthening.

A few of these accomplishments include:

  • 30% reduction of maternal mortality in Kibaale district through Saving Mothers, Giving Life
  • 8,000 individuals with HIV cared for at the IDI Clinic, and 106,100 individuals with HIV cared for through partnerships
  • 1,283,700 individuals counseled and tested for HIV through Outreach
  • 150,800 men circumcised through the Safe Male Circumcision Programme
  • 16,100 people trained across Africa through Training and Capacity Development
  • 10,100 queries on HIV answered by the AIDS Treatment Information Centre
  • 354 articles published in peer-reviewed journals through Research
  • 60 labs supported across Uganda through Laboratory Services
  • Technical assistance provided in Mali, Malawi, Swaziland, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nepal

Internally, Dr. Alex Coutinho directed and managed over 700 staff across multiple locations. Furthermore, he helped widen the IDI funding base to roughly 25 funders.

Prior to his departure, Dr. Coutinho launched the Strategic Plan 2013 – 2018, illustrating IDI’s goals for the next five years as well as its accomplishments to date. Echoing the sentiments of the Strategic Plan, Dr. Coutinho’s final message emphasized that IDI is in a strong programmatic and financial position. His message also encouraged IDI staff to continue focusing on producing quality results and remaining fully accountable to all stakeholders.

Dr. Coutinho planned for his departure for two years, resulting in a Senior Management Team and several management layers that have become fully empowered to run their operations with minimal supervision. In addition, Richard Brough - Head of Strategic Planning and Development - has taken up the mantle as acting Executive Director until June 2015, when a new Executive Director is expected to come on board. Richard Brough brings nine years of experience with IDI and has served as acting ED on numerous occasions.

The staff at IDI would like to thank Dr. Coutinho for his tremendous work over the years and wish him all the very best for the future.
