General Summary

The Infectious Diseases Institute is targeting young investigators with experience in research to support starting their career as independent investigators.

We aim to train one research fellow/post doc to transition to independent investigator by identifying a training grant opportunity and being paired with an international collaborator and local mentors (senior scientists at IDI). The training program will include mentorship full time stipend, and a lumpsum for research funds or formal training (course to apply to). The expected outcome of the training is a grant proposal through IDI in areas which need to be prioritized to end the HIV epidemic by 2030 or priority areas of the IDI strategic plan

The post-doc fellow is expected during the 12-month period to work on a grant proposal that is supported by previous data that the applicant has or aims to access and analyze in the first three months of the fellowship.

Eligibility

  1. Candidates with PhDs or in the final stages of completing their PhD are preferred. However candidates with a Masters level education AND a good research track record and publication for the past 3 years will be considered. 
  2. Candidates with evidence of having acquired competitive research funding for a career development/small grant project
  3. Candidates with evidence of support of at least one mentor/supervisor with publications and acquisition of independent funding in the last 3 years in the same area of expertise of the candidate proposal
  4. Candidates with evidence of access to preliminary data/samples that can support the proposed grant submission

Eligible participants will be assessed and scored based on their application package including the scientific rigor of the proposal and the qualifications of the candidate and the mentors and the potential of the proposed full proposal to be fundable.

Key Responsibilities

Key deliverable at the end of the 1-year scholarship period will be:

  1. A successful research grant proposal for independent funding (e.g., K43 awards, NIH K43, R21, EDCTP fellowship, African leadership award, small career grants like Glocal not considered) submitted and funded
  2. At least 1 publication in peer reviewed journals
  3. Mentorship of at least 1 junior researcher (e.g. master/PhD trainee) or a junior investigator in scientific writing with at least 1 publication submitted as last author

Key Components of the IDI funded scholarship:

  1. Salary support to ensure 100% protected time that will be monitored. This is a FULLTIME position
  2. Creation of a mentoring team specifically for grant writing. In addition to the candidate and the mentor proposed by the candidate the IDI will provide an additional IDI based mentor and will connect the candidate with potential international collaborators
  3. A lumpsum for research funds or formal training (course to apply to)
  4. Research office support (includes regulatory, REC submission support etc.)
  5. Pairing with a specific grants manager to understand requirements for the proposed grant submission and development of a budget

Post doc plans should include: (Plans that don’t adhere to guidelines and word limit will not be considered)

  1. Statement of career goals and plans. Describe why you are interested in an independent research career. In addition, please describe how your career goals relate to the IDI goals and how this fellowship will contribute to your career advancement as well as the institution research program. (Do not exceed 200 words)
  2. Fellowship plan. Research Plan. Describe your proposed research project, including its specific aims, significance, innovation, and approach. Details on your mentorship plan for your fellowship year must be included. Additionally, please include a paragraph explaining how your research will advance global public health. (Do not exceed 800 words)
  3. Ethics Approvals Plan. Being a 1 year fellowship using data of samples with already REC approval is desirable. If these are not available, the candidate should describe a feasible timeline for REC and UNCST approvals (100 words) .
  4. Additional Funding (if applicable). Describe any additional sources of funding that you have available for your project / fellowship, or that you are applying for (Do not exceed 100 words).

About the ACE

In 2019, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), in collaboration with Makerere University’s Colleges of Computing & Health Sciences and the Office of Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology at the United States' National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), established the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE) in Uganda. Job Summary
The ACE is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic recent graduate to join us as a junior systems administrator. This graduate trainee position offers a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to kickstart their career in server systems administration. The graduate trainee in server systems administration is responsible for supporting the management and maintenance of server systems. This role involves configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting server hardware and software to ensure optimal performance, as well as providing technical support to ACE server users and staff.

Responsible for sample transportation from lower health facilities to respective hubs,post office and deliver results in a timely manner ensuring high level of biosafety and bio security

The district DREAMS liaison’s officer main responsibility will be to engage Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYWs) in the specific district in order to identify HIV predisposing factors unique to them and bring these to the attention of the implementing partners DREAMS technical team. They will also provide guidance on implementation modalities that are proposed by the AGYWs in a bid to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS among them. The DREAMS champion will further participate in advocacy engagements by working with communities to protect AGYWs and promote DREAMS programming to other district AGYW stakeholder including Local government authorities for possible adoption

The position holder will work closely with the facility-based teams to integrate all care and treatment services along the HIV continuum for all sub-populations including adults, paediatrics, adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women, HIV-exposed infants, key and priority populations. In addition, the job holder will supervise the supportive HIV management systems including logistics and supply chain and laboratory systems for effective and efficient HIV services delivery.  They will promote and support quality improvement through use of CQI approaches at supported sites.
