General Summary

The SMC Nurse/STL will support provision Safe Male Medical Circumcision as part of quality Male Sexual Health services in his / her site as well as ensure timely documentation and reporting of the site where he or she is attached. He/she will provide leadership to the VMMC team in the assigned site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee scale up of Safe Male Medical Circumcision as part of quality Male Sexual Health service, and provide leadership to the site when assigned.
  • Ensure documentation of all surgical and follow-up procedures.  
  • Ensure that all activities as pertains to circumcision are conducted according to standard operating procedures and ethical requirements.
  • Participate with other surgical teams in service delivery e.g. during SMC procedures. Provide nursing care to clients attending the clinics.
  • Assess clinical patient problems
  • Participate in Cleaning, disinfecting, packing and sterilization of surgical instruments  
  • Treat each client with dignity, respect and understanding in accordance with IDI’s philosophy
  • Communicate professionally to different stakeholders
  • Participate as a full member and provide leadership to the IDI VMMC team in the assigned site
  • Willingness to support other project related duties as required.  
  • Participate in site static and outreach SMC activities.
  • Provide post-operative care to SMC clients.
  • Adhere to all Institutional Occupational Health, Safety, Environment and Safeguarding (OHSE) policies, procedures, and guidelines and participate in all mandatory activities

Academic Qualifications

  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution

Person Specification

  • Ability to communicate with clients in local languages is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SMC for HIV prevention.  
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a health care setting is essential with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate skills in Quality improvement in for SMC service provision in line with MOH standards.
  • Good computer presentation skills.
  • Experience and basic skills in Logistic handling and management
  • Willingness to work and live in rural areas is required.

In a multicenter-project run by the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) and Charité Universitaetsmedizin Berlin including further clinical and research institutions in Rwanda and DR Congo, a total of 3,600 malaria patients will be recruited at nine sentinel sites and in two recruitment rounds. Mutations of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum predicting artemisinin resistance (K13 gene, MDR1 gene) will be genotyped. Alongside sample collection, patients will be interviewed, questionnaire-based, on potential determinants of emerging artemisinin resistance, including, among others, preferred health care procedures in case of sickness, sources of antimalarial drug consumption, herbal remedies, socio-economic status. The analysis of determinants of artemisinin resistance will be conducted for the whole sample population and stratified by country.

The student is invited to do their MSc thesis within the ARMEA project. Formal supervision at IDI will be provided by Dr Benard S. Bagaya, and additional laboratory training and supervision, as well as quality control will be provided by staff at CHUB, Rwanda. The student will be included in the international ARMEA consortium and is invited to attend a 2-week training in Rwanda. Continuous online mentoring is provided for education in molecular techniques and analysis from the team at CHUB, Rwanda, and at Charité, Germany.

Background

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is part of the Centers for Antimicrobial Optimization Network (CAMO-Net) awarded by Wellcome Trust (#226692/Z/22/Z) which is a multidisciplinary global collaboration with institutions in other countries (UK, India, South Africa and Brazil) to address the impact of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) on human health.
