General Summary

The enrolled Nurse will support the provision of comprehensive HIV/AIDS care and treatment services to the Health facility clients in line with the Good clinical practices

Key Responsibilities

  • Support clinical assessment and evaluation of health or illnesses of clients and give proper individualized patient centred care and treatment in line with Good clinical practices.
  • Ensure proper running and functioning of the ART clinic in line with COVID-19 prevention measures.
  • Prepare and submit periodic activity work plans, monthly timesheets and periodic reports to key stakeholders in line with Health facility targets  
  • Provide appropriate advice, health education and counselling to patients and their caregivers.
  • Monitor the implementation of procedures comprehensive HIV care package at the HF as per the set targets for the health facility.
  • Participate in HF QI activities in liaison with the HF in charge and the QI Focal Person.
  • Participate in management of non-suppressed clients in the supported facilities
  • Participate in client retention interventions at facility and community levels.
  • Participate in case finding interventions at health facility levels
  • Provide technical support to at least three to four small volume health facilities in his or her catchment area.

Academic Qualifications

  • Certificate of enrolment in Nursing

The meningitis research team aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of meningitis in adults. Currently, 3 studies are running in Kampala:

  1. COAST – an observational cohort study investigating etiologies and outcomes amongst adults presenting with meningitis.
  2. BPaLMZ - A Phase 2 Novel Antimicrobial Combination Therapy to Treat Tuberculous Meningitis
  3. PLATFORM-CM - open-label randomized trial with single or potentially multiple interventional arms to compare the efficacy and safety of novel antifungal or adjunctive therapies to standard of care (SOC) controls of WHO first-line therapy.

Job Summary

The Research Nurse is responsible for supporting the implementation of clinical research studies by providing high-quality participant care and ensuring study activities are conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), study protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements. The Research Nurse is responsible for participant recruitment, informed consent, clinical assessments, study procedures, safety monitoring, accurate documentation, and maintaining participant confidentiality while working closely with investigators, study coordinators, and other members of the research team.

The Meningitis Research Group aims to improve the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of meningitis in adults. Currently, 4 studies are running in Kampala and Mbarara:

  1. COAST – an observational cohort study investigating etiologies and outcomes amongst adults presenting with meningitis.
  2. HARVEST 2.0 - A Phase 2 Novel Antimicrobial Combination Therapy to Treat Tuberculous Meningitis
  3. PLATFORM-CM - Platform Trial For Cryptococcal Meningitis.

To strengthen support to these core areas of operation, the IDI-Meningitis research group seeks to recruit a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Officer to support the implementation of quality systems for clinical research studies by ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), study protocols, sponsor requirements, and regulatory standards. Background:

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University has been awarded a grant from the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) to carry out a large-scale trial of secondary TB preventive therapy. The Recurrent TB Screening and Prevention Study (RECENT TB study) is a randomized controlled trial which will be carried out in Uganda and South Africa from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2030. The study will examine the effectiveness of secondary TPT for preventing recurrent TB while also evaluating the implementation considerations for the successful implementation of secondary TPT in public health settings and the potential of biomarkers to identify patients at the highest risk of recurrence.

To support the successful implementation of this trial, IDI is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a study coordinator while simultaneously pursuing a PhD. This dual role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge clinical research while developing advanced research skills at the doctoral level.

Job Purpose:

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the trial. S/he will work closely with the Scientific Lead and the broader study team to ensure high-quality, protocol-compliant study implementation. Concurrently, s/he will be enrolled in a doctoral program, using the trial data and research experience to develop and complete a PhD thesis within the contract period.
