General Summary

The Academy for Health Innovation, Uganda

The Academy for Health Innovation, Uganda (the Academy) is implementing a variety of projects related to AI and machine learning. We are seeking a junior data scientist to work across these projects and support development of AI within the Academy and wider IDI eco-system.

 

Job brief

Work will include: Working across project data held in the Academy for Health Innovation to understand and collate the data sets using analytical, statistical and programming skills. To support data visualization within the Academy to enhance our program activities and support partner understanding of project data. To provide technical support and guidance on AI and data science projects at the Academy.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Interrogate, understand and manage different datasets at the Academy to support   layering of AI methods onto the existing projects.
  2. Testing, validating and evaluating algorithms for CFL, ARTAccess and other health applications
  3. Assist with feature selection and algorithm optimization.
  4. Curate annotated datasets for Supervised Learning methods
  5. To provide technical support to the Hub for AI in Maternal and Sexual Reproductive Health (HASH Project activities under the lead of project co-ordinator).
  6. Support monitoring, evaluation and capacity building of HASH subgrantees.
  7. To support stakeholder engagement with current and potential partners for the Academy’s AI projects.
  8. Supporting data visualization of complex health datasets
  9. Devise data representation and visualization protocols.
  10. Compilation and writing of project reports
  11. Attend Academy AI project meetings and other relevant meetings.
  12. Remain updated in the rapidly changing field of Artificial Intelligence.

Academic Qualification

  • MSc level training in bioinformatics and/or data science.
  • Outstanding skills in machine learning methods and techniques.
  • Proven training in data science and its application on biomedical or health data
  • Training in bioinformatics and computational biology
  • Knowledge of Python, Unix and R

Specific Experience

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (like Keras or PyTorch) and libraries (like scikit-learn)
  • Previous or ongoing engagement with a biomedical research project

Person Specification

  1. Understanding of various AI techniques, particularly Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.
  2. Deep understanding of health data representation techniques, statistics and classification algorithms
  3. Able to work in a team environment
  4. Strong writing and communication skills
  5. An analytical mind with problem-solving abilities
