Barnabas Nawangwe

Vice Chancellor, Makerere University

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe is the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, having been re-appointed for a second term on August 12, 2022. An accomplished architect with a PhD from the Kyiv Institute of Building Technology, he has held significant academic leadership roles, including Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and Dean of the Faculty of Technology. Nawangwe has published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals and is actively involved in various professional organizations. His research interests focus on vernacular architecture and informal settlements, contributing to both national and international academic discourse in architecture and education.

Prof Yusuf Kiranda

Yusuf Kiranda

University Secretary, Makerere University

Yusuf Kiranda is the University Secretary of Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest public university. With a rich history at Makerere, he has previously served as Director of Research and Graduate Training and as a lecturer and associate professor in the Department of Religion and Peace Studies. Kiranda has also held leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Makerere University Council and First Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He is the Director of the Centre for Development Alternatives (CDA-East Africa) and possesses expertise in project management, governance, and youth development. Kiranda holds a Master’s Degree in Development Management from the London School of Economics.

Samuel Abimerech Luboga

Board Chairperson

Prof. Samuel Abimerech Luboga is the Chair of the Board of Directors at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) and a former Deputy Dean of Education at Makerere University’s School of Medicine. As an Associate Professor, he has been pivotal in IDI’s growth, focusing on strengthening health systems in Africa through research and capacity development. Under his leadership, IDI has expanded its services, providing care to over 200,000 individuals living with HIV and other infectious diseases across Uganda. Prof. Luboga’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes has made him a respected leader in the field, significantly impacting public health in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Wilfred Griekspoor

Board Audit Committee Chairperson

Wilfred Griekspoor is a distinguished public health expert with extensive experience in infectious diseases. As the Director Emeritus of McKinsey & Company in Amsterdam, he has driven strategic initiatives and policy changes that impact global health. Griekspoor has significantly contributed to various health initiatives, including a comprehensive review of water, sanitation, and hygiene strategies commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His work addresses critical challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and access to essential medicines. Recognized for his expertise, he has participated in numerous high-profile projects and publications, solidifying his reputation as a leading authority in global health.

Yuka Manaba

Yuka Manabe​

Programmes & Development Committee Chairperson​​

Prof. Yuka Manabe is a leading infectious diseases expert with over two decades of experience. Currently an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University, she specializes in HIV-TB co-infections and diagnostic innovation. From 2007 to 2012, she served as Head of Research at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala, Uganda, where she established a robust research infrastructure and trained numerous Ugandan researchers. With more than 140 peer-reviewed publications, her work focuses on health systems strengthening and implementation science in resource-limited settings. Prof. Manabe is dedicated to advancing rapid and point-of-care diagnostics, significantly enhancing global public health outcomes.

Dr Henry Gatyanga Mwebesa

Henry Gatyanga Mwebesa

Board Member

Dr. Henry Gatyanga Mwebesa is a distinguished medical professional with over 31 years of experience in the health sector. Currently serving as the Director General of Health Services at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, he oversees the technical supervision of health services nationwide. Dr. Mwebesa holds an MBChB from Makerere University and an MPH from Leeds University, complemented by extensive management training from prestigious institutions. He has successfully managed multimillion-dollar donor-funded projects in collaboration with organizations such as USAID and the World Bank. His expertise in quality improvement systems and health management makes him a vital asset in combating infectious diseases in Uganda.

Prof. Moses R. Joloba, IDI Board Programme Development Committee member, is a distinguished Professor and Dean of the Department of Microbiology at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, and a member of the Board of Directors at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI). With over 10,000 citations and 423 published research articles, he is recognized for his significant contributions to infectious diseases research. Prof. Joloba’s work emphasizes collaboration with various institutions both in Uganda and internationally, enhancing the understanding and treatment of infectious diseases. His leadership at IDI and Makerere University has been instrumental in advancing health research and education, making him a key figure in the global health community.

Alex Opio, IDI Board Programme Development Committee member, is a renowned expert in infectious diseases management with a strong background in research and education. As a member of the Board of Directors at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala, Uganda, he has significantly contributed to innovative healthcare interventions. His work emphasizes capacity building for healthcare providers in managing HIV, malaria, and pneumonia. Opio has collaborated with organizations such as the Ugandan Ministry of Health and Accordia Global Health Foundation. His research has been published in reputable journals like BMC Infectious Diseases, and he is recognized for his presentations at international conferences, establishing him as a respected authority in his field.

Harriet

Harriet Mayanja-Kizza

Board Member

Prof. Harriet Mayanja-Kizza is a distinguished Ugandan physician, researcher, and academic administrator with over four decades of experience. As a professor of internal medicine and immunology at Makerere University, she previously served as the Dean of the School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the interplay between AIDS and tuberculosis, particularly in immunopathogenesis and immune-modulation treatments. Prof. Mayanja-Kizza has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at numerous international conferences. Recognized as the best scientist in Uganda by the AD Scientific Index in 2022, her dedication to advancing healthcare outcomes has left a lasting impact on infectious diseases research in Africa.

Samuel Kanakulya Lubinga, IDI Board Audit Committee member, is the Executive Director of Singo United Investments. He plays a vital role in guiding IDI’s mission to strengthen health systems and combat infectious diseases through innovative research, training, and clinical care. With a strong background in business leadership and investment, Lubinga supports IDI’s initiatives in areas such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. His commitment to improving public health outcomes in Uganda and the broader African region underscores his dedication to making a meaningful impact in the healthcare sector.

Umar Kakumba

Umar Kakumba

Board Member

Dr. Umar Kakumba is an esteemed academic and administrator currently serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Makerere University, Uganda. He holds a PhD in Public Affairs from the University of Pretoria and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge. With a career spanning several years at Makerere, he has advanced to Associate Professor and served as Dean of the College of Business and Management Sciences for eight years. Dr. Kakumba is a member of the University’s Senate and Council, actively participating in international research initiatives like the Cambridge-Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx). His expertise includes public sector management, leadership, and public policy, complemented by extensive publications in internationally accredited journals.

Milly Katana

Milly Katana

Board Member

Milly Katana, IDI Board Audit Committee member, is a prominent HIV activist and advocate dedicated to enhancing the rights and well-being of individuals living with HIV. Her journey began as a student leader at Makerere University, leading to her co-founding the National Guidance and Empowerment Network for People Living with HIV (NGEN) in Uganda. Milly’s leadership has been instrumental in providing essential support and resources to affected communities, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a board member of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, she influences global health policies. Milly’s relentless advocacy continues to inspire change and empower individuals worldwide.

Dr. Jeremiah Chakaya is a renowned infectious disease expert and public health leader, currently serving as the Executive Director of the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. With over 25 years of experience in infectious disease research, treatment, and prevention, he has focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and emerging infectious diseases. Dr. Chakaya has held leadership roles at the World Health Organization and the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and he is a respected member of several professional societies. A graduate of the University of Nairobi, he is passionate about building research capacity to address the infectious disease burden in sub-Saharan Africa.

Andrew Kambugu

Andrew Kambugu

The Sande-McKinnell Exective Director

Dr. Andrew Kambugu is a distinguished medical professional and the Executive Director of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Uganda. With a robust background in infectious diseases and global health, he has dedicated his career to enhancing healthcare outcomes across Africa. Dr. Kambugu’s expertise encompasses clinical research, program management, and policy development, significantly impacting the global response to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He holds a medical degree and a Master’s in Public Health from Makerere University and the University of California, Berkeley, respectively. A prolific researcher, he has published extensively and is recognized as a leader in global health initiatives.

Aggrey Semeere

Aggrey S. Semeere

Head of Department, Prevention, Care, and Treatment

Dr. Aggrey S. Semeere is a General Internal Medicine Specialist with advanced training in Epidemiology and Implementation Science having completed his Internal Medicine training at Makerere University and earned a Master’s degree in Advanced research from the University of California, San Francisco. He leads the Prevention, Care, and Treatment Programme and also oversees several research projects.  Dedicated to improving the care of people living with HIV at IDI and across Uganda, Dr Semeere focuses on providing evidence-based care, refining clinical guidelines, and optimizing care models via research on the diagnosis and management of both HIV and non-communicable comorbidities.  He is also committed to teaching and mentoring trainees in Internal Medicine, Epidemiology, and Implementation Science.

Dr. Barbara Castelnuovo, MD, PhD, is an esteemed Italian clinical researcher specializing in Infectious Diseases, based at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Uganda. Trained at the University of Milan and holding a PhD from the University of Antwerp, she has been instrumental at IDI since 2004. With over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals, her research emphasizes service delivery and outcomes in infectious diseases through observational studies and operational research. Dr. Castelnuovo leads research capacity-building programs and has participated in numerous clinical trials as an Investigator and Principal Investigator, significantly advancing knowledge and practices in the field of infectious diseases.

Dr. Francis Kakooza is the Interim Head of Global Health Security at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University. With a robust background in infectious diseases, he is committed to enhancing global health security. Dr. Kakooza holds a Master’s in International Infectious Diseases Management and a PhD in Pathogen Genomics and Molecular Epidemiology from Makerere University. His extensive experience includes leading projects on biosafety, antimicrobial resistance, and global health security initiatives. Passionate about molecular diagnostics and emerging infectious diseases, he focuses on building research teams for Especially Dangerous Pathogens and CDC-funded capacity-building projects, significantly contributing to public health interventions.

Tom Kakaire

Tom Kakaire

Head of Department, Strategic Planning and Development

Tom Kakaire is the Head of Strategic Planning and Development at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University, bringing over 18 years of management experience in the NGO sector, particularly in public health. Since assuming leadership in 2015, he has been instrumental in strategic planning, partnership development, and institutional monitoring and evaluation. Previously, he headed the IDI Grants Management team, successfully establishing and managing various departments. Kakaire is a respected resource for capacity building in grants acquisition and management and is dedicated to developing sustainable business models for the NGO sector. His leadership has significantly contributed to IDI’s success in addressing global health challenges.

Richard Senono

Richard Ssenono

Acting Head of Department, Information Services

Richard Ssenono is the Acting Head of Information Services at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University. With over 12 years of experience in information management and ICT for health, he holds a Bachelor’s in Library and Information Science, a Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology, a Master’s in Information Technology, and a PhD candidate. Ssenono oversees ICT, software development, knowledge management, and data management, leading a team that supports over 100 projects. He trains healthcare workers in information literacy and collaborates with regional health organizations to enhance health information systems across Africa, making significant contributions to public health initiatives.

Dr. Stephen Okoboi is a prominent public health epidemiologist and the Deputy Head of Research at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Uganda. With a Master of Public Health and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Antwerp, he has over 20 years of experience in HIV/AIDS programming and infectious disease research. Dr. Okoboi’s work focuses on innovative strategies for HIV prevention, including peer-delivered self-testing and differentiated care models. His commitment to improving health outcomes has earned him recognition, including the NIH K43 Emerging Global Leader Award. He is dedicated to translating research into impactful public health policies in Uganda and beyond.

Deputy Head of Department, Health Systems Strengthening

Dr. Joanita Kigozi is a renowned expert in infectious diseases and the Deputy Head of Health Systems Strengthening at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery from Makerere University and a Master’s in Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, she has dedicated her career to improving healthcare outcomes across Africa. Since joining IDI in 2010, Dr. Kigozi has played a pivotal role in shaping programs that translate research into practice, focusing on prevention, care, and treatment strategies that significantly impact the lives of those affected by infectious diseases.

Walter Arinaitwe

Joseph Walter Arinaitwe

Acting Head of Department, Training and Capacity Development

Joseph Walter Arinaitwe currently serves as the Deputy Head of Training at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), where he leverages over seven years of expertise in eHealth and eLearning. He specializes in enhancing health worker capacity and strengthening health systems. As the head of the Learning Innovations Centre, Arinaitwe fosters strategic partnerships to maximize the impact of the Advanced Treatment Information Centre (ATIC) and IDI’s virtual learning environment (VLE). His innovative approaches focus on sustainable training for health workers, particularly in HIV clinical pharmacy and supply chain management, utilizing technology and IDI’s extensive network of infectious diseases experts.

Sylvan Kaboha

Sylvan Kaboha

Deputy Head of Department, Strategic Planning and Development

Sylvan Kaboha is the Deputy Head of the Strategic Planning and Development Department at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), where he has worked since April 2018. Previously, he spent 11 years at Deloitte, leading public sector initiatives and managing significant funding programs across East Africa. Sylvan has extensive experience in fund management, overseeing over 140 active grants valued at over $65 million, and a sub-granting portfolio of more than $17 million annually across multiple countries. He holds a degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University and has completed various executive programmes at Harvard Business School.

Dathan+Byonanebye+Mirembe

Dathan Byonanebye

Acting Deputy Head of Department, Global Health Security

 Dr Dathan Byonanebye, the Acting Deputy Head of the Department of Global Health Security at IDI, is a Medical doctor with double specialist training in Internal Medicine (Makerere University) and Public Health (University of Manchester). He is a Fellow of the East, Central, and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACoP). Dathan obtained his PhD (Medicine) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. His PhD focused on cardiovascular risk in people living with HIV/AIDS who are treated with contemporary antiretroviral therapy. His research interests include the intersection between infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Prior research has been on digital health interventions to optimize TB, the Integration of NCD in HIV care, and Public Health interventions to optimize NCD care.

Dr. Ruth Obaikol is the Co-Lead of the Academy for Health Innovations at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Uganda. With a strong background in infectious diseases, she is dedicated to strengthening health systems across Africa. At IDI, Dr. Obaikol oversees programs focused on prevention, care, treatment, and research training initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes and advocating for policy changes. Her deep understanding of the challenges faced by people living with HIV drives her commitment to ensuring quality care and support. An accomplished researcher, Ruth has numerous publications and presentations to her name, significantly impacting the field of infectious diseases.

Andrew Mujugira

Andrew Mujugira

Lead, IDI Kasangati HIV Prevention Site

Dr. Andrew Mujugira is a senior research scientist at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Uganda, where he also serves as the head of IDI Kasangati. He holds an MBChB, MSc, MPH, PhD, and MACE degrees, focusing his research on infectious diseases and their translation into effective policy and practice across Africa. Under his leadership, IDI implements programs in prevention, care, treatment, and health systems strengthening. Dr. Mujugira is committed to enhancing health outcomes for people living with infectious diseases and has played a vital role in advancing IDI’s mission to provide quality care and conduct impactful research.

Dr Daudi Jjingo

Daudi Jjingo

Director, African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences

Dr. Daudi Jjingo is a distinguished bioinformatics scientist and the Director of the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), Makerere University. He earned his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has extensive experience in molecular epidemiology, particularly in TB/HIV and cancer epigenetics. As a Principal Investigator of the NIH/Fogarty Bioinformatics training grant in Uganda, Dr. Jjingo enhances data-intensive research across Africa. A Senior Scientist and Lecturer at Makerere University, he advocates for virtual reality applications in health innovation and has published numerous impactful research papers in his field.

Keith MCAdam Prof

Keith McAdam

Executive Director (2004—2007)

Keith McAdam is a distinguished expert in tropical diseases and a former Scottish cricketer, born on August 13, 1945, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Growing up in Uganda, where his father was a professor of surgery, he pursued medicine at Clare College, Cambridge. As the founding director of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University, established in 2001, McAdam has transformed IDI into a centre of excellence for training, clinical care, and research, particularly in HIV infection. He serves as an associate international director at the Royal College of Physicians in London and is the founder of “Music for my Mind,” a charity supporting dementia patients.

Dr Alex Coutinho

Alex Coutinho

Executive Director (2007—2014)

Dr. Alex Coutinho is a distinguished global health leader with over 40 years of experience in medicine and public health across Africa. Since the emergence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda in 1982, he has been instrumental in providing care and treatment for individuals living with HIV. Dr. Coutinho led large-scale HIV prevention and treatment programmes in Swaziland, Uganda, and Rwanda. As Executive Director of TASO from 2001 to 2007, he expanded services to over 100,000 individuals in Uganda. Later, as Executive Director of the Infectious Diseases Institute at Makerere University, he enhanced access to care for 105,000 individuals and implemented key health initiatives. His contributions have earned him the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize and leadership roles in organizations like the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the Global Fund.

Dr. Richard Brough is a prominent health leader with over a decade of experience in planning and managing health services. He served as the Executive Director of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University, where he played a pivotal role in its development and growth. Prior to this, he was Head of Strategic Planning and Development at IDI and acted as Executive Director in late 2014.
