Point of Care Ultrasound Training for Practicing Health Workers | 4th – 22nd March 2024

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University invites applicants for the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Training for Health workers. This training is designed to provide clinical care providers proficiency in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). The program is recommended for healthcare practitioners whose scope of practice allows them to use POCUS to make a bedside diagnosis or to enhance their clinical and therapeutic decision-making.
It is not intended to replace the traditional/comprehensive ultrasound examinations. Point of care ultrasound aims at answering specific clinical questions that aid clinical decision-making to expedite action

Course Overview

The course is organized in modules and each module covers a reasonable amount of content to develop competencies of health workers to provide affordable, timely and reliable ultrasound services to the underserved communities. All trainees will choose one module during the course of the training.

Focus Areas

Focused Assessment with Sonography in HIV/TB (FASH)

  1. Chest effusion
  2. Pericardial pathologies
  3. Splenic lesions/Micro-abscesses
  4. Abdominal lymphadenopathy

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST)

  1. Chest/abdominal trauma
  2. Pneumothorax
  3. Organ rapture/tear
  4. Pericardial/pleural hemorrhage

Obs/Gyn emergencies

  1. Pregnancy dating
  2. Amniotic fluid volume
  3. Trauma in pregnancy
  4. Foetal viability
  5. Severe LAP/PV bleeding
  6. Abdominal pain
  7. Palpable abdomen/pelvic mass
  8. Hypovolaemic shock

Basic lung ultrasound examination (BLUE)

  1. Lung/pleura abnormalities.
  2. Acute respiratory and circulatory failure.

Course Eligibility

This course is most useful for all frontline health workers including medical officers, clinical officers, nurse/midwives.
