Dr. Bernard Ssentalo Bagaya, PhD

Dr. Bernard Bagaya is a graduate of BS. and MSc, from Makerere University, Kampala-Uganda, and a PhD in Molecular Virology from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He earned his PhD in 4 years and was awarded the Kramptz Prize for Outstanding Graduate Student of 2014. Dr. Bagaya has accumulated over 18 years of technical and research experience in HIV and other virology work, and in candidate vaccines clinical trial evaluation; he has worked for multi-national groups such as Makerere University Walter Reed Project and UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program, Entebbe-Uganda. Since 2018 Dr. Bagaya became a Faculty at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology. He is a passionate teacher of Immunology and Virology, and Medical Diagnostics courses to both undergraduate and graduate students. He mentors Masters and PhD students who are integrated into his research in HIV diversity, Fitness, pathogensis and Candidate Vaccine trials. He also studies biological factors affecting immune responses to vaccines in Africa.
