How We Do It

“Global health security is achieved when all countries possess strong and resilient public health systems that can effectively prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats, ensuring the health and well-being of populations globally.”

Infectious disease threats anywhere — whether natural, accidental, or deliberate — pose significant risks to global health, security, and the economy. The novel COVID-19 pandemic and recent outbreaks of Ebola in Uganda are poignant reminders that the work to achieve global health security is urgent. IDI strengthens heath systems from the national to the local level that are critical to:

  • Prevent, detect, and respond effectively to emerging disease risks and threats;
  • Improve preparedness to create resilient health systems, and
  • Conduct research to find innovative solutions to health challenges.

Community Level

IDI strengthens and promotes prevention efforts, communication campaigns, advocacy, and engagement, ranging from insecticide-treated net distribution to community theatre, immunization uptake campaigns, and the introduction of advocacy groups to empower young girls and women affected by HIV/AIDS.

District Level

We provide support to district health leaders and providers to improve the quality of service delivery through quality improvement collaboratives, knowledge management, shared learning, and health workforce development.

National and Regional Levels

We strengthen a coordinated infectious disease response, including preparedness and planning efforts for outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats, support information systems and networks to improve surveillance, strengthen laboratory diagnostics, streamline supply chains, and scale up the use of innovative digital technologies.
