The research capacity building unit has supported 78 master’s trainees, 25 PhD students, and 26 post-doctorate students, and 33 research fellows, all of whom are funded and hosted at the institute. Thanks to research capacity-building programmes like the Sewankambo Scholars, IDI continues to build the research capacity of outstanding young Ugandan researchers in terms of PhDs awarded and the ability of alumni to win grants, publish, mentor others, and support related research elsewhere in Uganda and in the region. To date, over 20 IDI research alumni are currently in senior-level teaching, research, leadership, policy, and program management positions at Makerere University and globally.
