The IDI REC was established to uphold the highest standards in ethical conduct of research by enabling faculty, staff, students and established researchers conduct research in a timely and efficient manner. The primary role of the IDI REC is to check for scientific soundness of all research protocols involving human subjects and ensure protection of rights, safety and welfare of study participants. It draws its mandate from accreditation by Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST); with accreditation number (026) and registered with the Federal Wide Assurance (FWA 00011673)

An outstanding ethics committee that protects the rights and welfare of human research participants in accordance to national and international guidelines

REC Membership

In line with UNCST guidelines, the Committee includes a gender-representative multidisciplinary team of competent and experienced medical scientists, public health specialists, sociologists, Community representatives and health systems management specialists.

Protocol Reviews

The Committee meets on the second Friday of every month, with flexibility allowed based on submissions. Depending on the risk level, proposals are subjected to either a convened (full committee), fast track, or exempt review process. For a convened review, submissions are to be made no later than 10 working days to a given meeting date; with feedback given within 7 working days from the day of review. Site inspection visits are regularly conducted for approved studies.

Virtual Operation

The IDIREC operates virtually throughout; to flexibly allow researchers make online submissions remotely, till final approval.
