African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences

The African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE) is a consortium of research and training centres facilitated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is the first of its kind on the Makerere campus in Uganda. The centre provides researchers with mentoring, computer resources, and laboratory tools necessary for modern biomedical research. The goal of the centre is to train a new generation of African scientists in bioinformatics and data-intensive sciences to address the continent’s health challenges.

The Kasangati site is focused on conducting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) efficacy trials, demonstration projects, and implementation studies. The current studies aim to develop methods to build self-efficacy and empowerment, increase antiretroviral adherence, and reduce sexual risk behaviours among key populations in Uganda.
