The National Microbiology Reference Laboratory at UNHLS became the first government-owned laboratory in Uganda to attain accreditation by the US College of American Pathologists (CAP).

IDI with funding from the US CDC and the UK Fleming Fund played an instrumental role in enrolling the laboratory on the CAP accreditation scheme, strengthening its operations, provided equipment and requisite supplies and built capacity of the staff in quality management systems. The laboratory consistently performed satisfactorily on the scheme, undergoing a successful assessment for accreditation in September 2021.

During the Inaugural Laboratory Day, the CAP Accreditation certificate was presented to the Ministry in the presence of senior management and key partners. This essential quality milestone will strengthen the national antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance capacity.
